Help us change and save lives.

The holiday season is just around the corner, and for many, this is an exciting time of the year; a time when we can enjoy the company of our families and friends. For some, though, this can be a challenging time, especially for families who are staying in a shelter or have recently left shelter. Trying to cope with fleeing a violent situation, looking for a sense of normalcy and transitioning to a new way of life can be difficult.

With your generosity and support, you can join Wendy’s 9th Annual Support WIN House ~30-day Campaign~ to collect local gift cards during Family Violence Prevention Month in Alberta. A gift card helps families rebuild their lives during and after leaving WIN House. The campaign is unique and supports many families in various ways. Rather than donating actual food or household items, the ask is that you donate gift cards from local stores. The goal is still to collect as many gift cards from a variety of grocery stores such as No Frills, Giant Tiger, Superstore, Safeway, and Shoppers Drug Mart as these are the stores most known to the families, accessible and affordable. This provides families the freedom to select food based on their dietary needs, the opportunity to shop for basic necessities, and the empowerment to purchase their household items.

You may also wish to donate a unused/unwanted gift card or provide a gift card to a restaurant, movie theater, coffee shop, book store, or local clothing stores. The families appreciate the gift cards and have expressed gratitude when receiving them. For example, one woman shared how gift cards to McDonalds allowed her to plan a special birthday party for her child during a difficult time. Receiving a gift card, in any amount, help families focus on their journey forward knowing they are supported when they need it the most. Gift cards get distributed to families throughout the year since women and children often arrive at WIN House with very little. These gift cards are unique gifts that empower families to heal and start a new beginning. By donating a gift card, you give women and children the opportunity to feel empowered to purchase items they need for a brighter future, and to celebrate the special moments in life.

As well, for another gift card idea, when families are escaping abusive homes, they are often faced with the challenge of finding shelter for their pets. The Pet Safekeeping Program is a safe alternative for pets when there is no safe place to turn to. After a shelter stay, a mom and child reunite with their pet. You could help positively support the reunification process with a gift card from your local pet store.

Wendy’s Gift Card Campaign began in 2013 and since then the gift cards dollar amount has exceeded $20,000. Last year’s response was overwhelming with many donors contributing to the gift card purchase. As of today, very few gift cards are remaining – just in time for Wendy’s campaign to raise more!
