It’s a shocking statistic. Each year, thousands of women and children flee domestic violence to find shelter at one of Alberta’s women’s shelters. Many women leave quickly with their children taking nothing more than the clothes on their backs in a desperate attempt to get away. Having somewhere safe is vital to these families.
No one should be forgotten during the holidays. For 19 years, thanks to the generous support of our community, the Global News Give Me Shelter campaign has provided thousands of much-needed items and Christmas gifts for women and children who are the victims of violence in our community, as well as thousands of dollars in donations.
This year, Global News is inviting our viewers and listeners to support the 19th Annual Global News Give Me Shelter campaign. Join us and stand up for women and children fleeing domestic violence by making sure they have the items they need, and more when they arrive at the women’s shelters. We are asking our community to donate gift cards and online monetary donations to help make the holidays a bit brighter for these women and children. Donations will be accepted until December 15.
Like last year, the need is great and not lessening.
To donate gift cards, Global Edmonton has set up a donation box at the front entrance of our Global Edmonton Studios at 5325 Allard Way. Gift cards can also be mailed, before December 13, to 5325 Allard Way, Edmonton, AB, T6H 5B8.
All donations will be divided evenly among the 6 participating Edmonton and area shelters including WIN House, the other participating shelters are A Safe Place, Jessie’s House, La Salle Shelter, Lurana Shelter, and WINGS of Providence
There are many women’s shelters throughout Alberta that need your support this holiday season. Consider a donation to the shelters in your area. Go to ACWS.ca to find a shelter in your community.
Thank you for showing you care by making a donation and standing up for the women and children who are escaping family violence during the holidays, and every day.
