“A positive contribution to the quality of life and well-being of members in the community … benefits many generations to come.” – BROOKFIELD RESIDENTIAL

Brookfield Residential is a leading North American new home builder and land developer with one goal in mind—to create the best places to call home. Creating community is at the heart of what they do, and it’s motivated them to build thriving communities for Albertans to call home and put down roots for the last 60 years.

Since its inception, Brookfield Residential has been bringing people together with the goal of creating physical foundations that can provide safe and secure shelter for generations to come. They are passionate about fostering community and being involved in meaningful change.

It’s this shared commitment to community that has made the relationship between WIN House and Brookfield Residential so special. Brookfield Residential’s financial support of our Under the Umbrella gala has not only helped increase
our revenue to help support our programs and services, it has also helped raise awareness of the human rights issue of domestic violence.

We all deserve safe shelter
Shelter is something that most of us take for granted. Our home makes us feel safe, warm, and secure. At home, we are free from danger. Our children are free to express themselves and given every opportunity to grow, mentally and physically, in an environment of trust, respect, and care. Having a place to call home also allows us to put down roots and be part of a community.

But for many, the idea of home as a safe haven or shelter from the challenges of everyday life is not a reality. They may have a roof over their head, but any feeling of safety and security is fleeting at best. When home is an unstable environment full of fear, trauma, and violence, it becomes a space to run away from, not run towards. In those situations, having a safe place to escape to can literally mean the difference between life and death.

The need continues to grow
Annual data released by the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters for 2018 shows that more Alberta women now face “severe or extreme” danger from their partners. In 2017/18, Alberta shelters accommodated 10,390 women, children and seniors. They also fielded 58,117 crisis calls—an increase of 10 per cent from the number of calls in 2015/16.

Women have come to WIN House over the past 50 years, with or without children, to seek shelter and safety from the terror at home. They come, sometimes with nothing more than the clothes on their backs and whatever they could grab on their way out the door, looking for peace and support to fi gure out their next steps. For those who can move towards an abuse-free life, the journey often starts with a new home—a place to feel safe and put down roots.

Brookfield Residential’s support of WIN House and our mission to provide safe shelter and foster non-violent relationships and environments for those fleeing domestic violence has made a huge impact. It allows us to support our clients, programs and services so they may continue to grow and thrive.

Brookfield Residential believes that when it makes “a positive contribution to the quality of life and well-being of members in the community, it benefits many generations to come.” WIN House strives to provide safety and well- being to those we care for every day in shelter so they may one day find peace from abuse. Working with partners like Brookfield Residential, we truly believe that we can save and change lives. Together we can create a world where putting down roots in an abuse-free home is the norm.
